The First Descendent Void Fragment Missions

Here are some tips about Void Fragment Missions in The First Descendent, which can be especially useful if you are doing them solo.
  • Tactically advantageous positioning can be extremely important and can make the difference between a safe and fast run, or a frantic dangerous run where you are exposed with no cover.
    • As we discover advantageous locations, we'll post them in separate posts indexed below. These advantageous positions are the same for Normal and Hard Mode maps.
    • Ideally you want enemies to bunch up and come around a corner, or leap up or down to get at you.
      • In both cases, generally you are in cover until the enemy exposes themselves first.
      • If enemies jump, they are idle for about one second after their jump, giving you extra time to shoot at them while they are immobile.
      • If you have a shorter range weapon like a submachinegun it is better to get them close than to run toward them while exposed to their gunfire.
      • If you can predict where they are coming from you can set up area-denial skills.
      • All their drops are in one place, so if you need HP or MP or ammunition, you don't have to scramble all over to find drops.
  • Don't worry too much about the timer until the end.
    • You do not have to finish damaging the Fragment. Once the timer starts, the event begins.
    • The enemy wave starts when the Fragment is shielded again whether you have finished damaging it or not. Damaging it and causing it to shield will just start the enemy wave faster.
      • If you attack the Fragment with a damage-over-time, you can use the shield countdown to get into position to handle the waves.
    • There are two waves of enemies. After the second wave, you must completely destroy the Fragment or you will be forced to fight an extra wave with no real benefit to you.
  • There are generally two spawn points (sometimes more). Let's call them A and B.
    • At the start, A and B both spawn enemies. You must clear all enemies before both A and B will spawn any more.
    • So if you clear A, then run over to clear B, you might find a bunch of enemies spawning right on top of you at B depending on how close you are to the spawn point.
      • Depending on the enemies or your skills, you may or may not want this.
      • If they are exploding enemies like Trapballs, you probably don't want this.
    • Typically enemies who don't know where you are will start moving slowly toward the Void Fragment and stand there.
      • If you find the mission hard, you can use this to your advantage by positioning yourself away from the Fragment and in cover, to pull enemies only when you are ready.
      • If the map is Public, they can sometimes wander away from the Fragment possibly because they hear gunfire or detect Descendents elsewhere. This can result in you hunting around for stragglers all over the map.
    • If they know where you are, they will do typical enemy AI: Move toward you only as far as they can hit you. This generally means that if you block their line of sight they will get closer.
      • Sniper-type enemies will still generally stay quite far away. Which is fine since they can't hit you and can deal with them last.
    • If you are too far away from the Fragment, enemies will turn back and go to the Fragment. There doesn't seem to be a significant distance limit before you are "out of mission bounds", so in the worst case you can keep retreating away until the enemies turn back.
    • There is no time limit to clearing each spawn so if you are for some reason not ready (e.g., looking for ammunition or HP or MP or skill cooldown), leave a couple enemies alive.
