Here are some tactically advantageous positions for The First Descendent Void Fragment Missions in White-Night Gulch.
Toxic / level 54 (slides 1-2)
- Stand on the wall and take cover behind a pillar. The pillar shown in slide 2 has more space to actually get behind.
- In the worst case if you are overrun on the wall, drop down below (putting the wall between you and the Fragment). Enemies will probably meander a bit before dropping down as well.
- Watch for enemies that might wander down and end up flanking you from the side or shooting from below. This rarely happens though.
Non-Attribute / level 56 (slides 3-4)
- The Fragment is a cave, so obviously the cave is a trap and you should get out as soon as possible. There are two routes: A narrow tunnel, and a broader one with a waterfall. Take whichever works, just get out as soon as the mission begins.
- Once outside, head to an outcropping of rock on the left side (slide 4). You can jump or grapple, and once there if you need cover from enemy fire, back up and around the side of the mountain. Enemies cannot follow you there.
- After clearing all enemies outside, there will probably be a few left inside near the Fragment. Go back into the cave; when they have line of sight to you, they will pursue. Lure them out before killing them or the spawn points outside will swarm you again.
Chill / level 60 (slides 5-7)
- Start on the plateau (slide 6) but far from the edge.
- You will probably want to start by taking cover near the green rock (green arrow on slide 6).
- This is because there is a spawn point near the big cave mouth (red arrow on slide 6) and they generally will always spot you. If you are close to the plateau edge, not only are you out of cover but you will likely pull the enemies below.
- Melee enemies have very high kill priority because they can force you out of cover and there is a lot of open space where you can be exposed to enemy fire.
- Once you have dealt with the enemies from the cave mouth spawn point, move toward the edge to pull the others.
- There are a lot of shooters so you probably want to pull back from the edge to break line of sight quickly. This will also force the enemies to hop up onto the plateau, which slows the number that advance and shoot at you at a given time.
- An alternate position is the long narrow path leading from the teleporter base down to the Fragment (slide 7).
- You might have to keep backing up to find decent cover depending on the enemy angle.
- The enemy has a long run to get to you, so there's typically more time to handle melee rushers.
- This can be a slower run because you may have to hunt for far-off enemies to finish a wave and then retreat back to the passage.
- All enemies are funnelled into this passage, so you are not flanked.
- Be ready to use skills against shield-bearing enemies if you cannot take them down from afar.
- The lightning burst special effect from Thunder Cage can damage enemies with shields up.
- You may want to ignore the Fragment when its shield goes down for the first time and instead stay behind cover.
Toxic / level 62 (slides 8-9)
- There is a cliff near the Void Fragment and some open ground below it. You can jump and grapple to it across the chasm or run around the long way.
- Using the cliff you can get cover from enemy fire. Enemies typically have to jump down to see and attack you.
- If you start there, enemies might not know where you are, so you may have to run up and let them spot you before they start coming at you.
Fire / level 64 (slides 10-12)
- Stay on the high ledge overlooking the Fragment. Enemies cannot reach your location.
- The hardest part is probably the spawn of several Ascetics, who carry a shield, have a strong gun (chill damage?), and slowly regenerate.
- Very carefully position yourself so that they can't shoot at you and you can see their head. Mostly they will have their shields up, but eventually they will lower it, generally all at once. At that point, their heads are exposed briefly and you can quickly try to shoot them. Keep it up and eventually they will die. Fortunately there is no time limit on this mission.
- You could also jump down and try to deal with them with your skills, but that many Ascetics shooting at you can be very dangerous.
