Hogwarts Legacy top tip - Don't Explore... Yet

This is one of our series of Hogwarts Legacy tips for beginners.

Very early on you are encouraged in various ways to work on your challenges, along with the ominous tip that you only level up if you do so.
However, the  game locks key functions from you, so if you do too much exploration, you will end up in various types of trouble. (Really terrible design IMO especially since the world really is so fascinating to explore).

There are two main issues:
  • Gear Storage
    • You don't have a lot of storage for gear and a lot of containers give you gear. You can't get rid of any until you get to Hogsmeade, so I recommend following the Main Quest closely until you are sent there.
  • Missing Prerequisites
    • Many areas require spells that you need to get from the Main Quest, and some puzzles require spells from Assignments. So even if you do a lot of exploration very early on and convert all the gear you find into money, you'll likely have to retrace your steps over and over once you have the required spells.
    • Some puzzles can't even be attempted without doing a tutorial Side Quest to introduce them to you.
What you can do:
  • Get to Hogsmeade as soon as possible. Then you won't have to worry about not being able to carry more.
    • If you follow the main story quests closely, it won't be long before this happens. So in the meantime, don't run around Hogwarts Castle solving puzzles only to not be able to pick up any gear.
  • Once you get Alohomora and unlock it to level 3, exploration is basically unlocked and you can start in earnest.
    • From Alohomora it's not too far to get Beasts and the Loom so you might as well do that for the main systems unlocked and so you can do something at creature lairs you encounter.
    • Also, being able to capture ("rescue") Beasts also means you can sell them for 120 coins each, and there are lots of lairs to raid for money.
  • Don't worry about not being able to find gear later since you can always buy gear of any grade at Gladrags.
    • Gear has a fixed value based on grade, not level, so higher-level gear won't sell for more or cost more to buy.
    • The only thing you might be missing out is Unidentified Gear with traits, but there's nothing you can do about the Traits in the gear and you'll eventually sell all gear made obsolete by level anyway.
  • If you want to reserve containers to farm Trait gear later, you can try to be discerning in what you open:
    • Very small pouches only always (?) contain a bit of gold that's probably not scaled to your level, so just pick those up.
    • Large tall sacks also usually just have coin, so pick those up too.
    • Small plain-looking chests might have mediocre (Green) gear but often just coin.
    • Chests with the Eye have a fixed amount of gold.
      • There are quite a few in Hogsmeade, which helps if you are trying to pick up Seeds or Spellcrafts for early Assignments.
    • Special "Collection Chests" always contain a Collectible, and the count in each area is tracked (see below, slides 1 and 2).
Even if you focus the Main Quest, stop whenever you can harvest Moonstone with Accio (or Depulso). Always. You need piles of this for the Room of Requirement.
  • The maximum amount you can have in inventory is 999, although you will still get a notification that you have collected Moonstone.
