Hogwarts Legacy - Gear drops aren't about Gearing

This is one of our series of Hogwarts Legacy tips for beginners.

Gear drops in Hogwarts Legacy aren't about exciting gear at all. They are about money and fashion.

In the game you will encounter a lot of chests and miscellaneous containers that give you a piece of gear. Sometimes when you defeat an enemy, especially an "Infamous Foe", you will also receive a piece of gear. The "best" will be Legendary grade (gold) gear.

Based on these early experiences you may be inclined to value the colourful drops... but really, they all translate into just things to sell for coin.
(Although if you care about having a big wardrobe of fashion choices, then you do want to pick up as many pieces as possible because you add the "look" of a gear piece to your wardrobe choices even if you sell the item.)
  • In the early game when you level quickly, you will rapidly get better-stat gear so everything you pick up will quickly be obsolete.
  • Until you get access to the Room of Requirement, it appears that gear with Traits will not drop.
    • Even when you do start to get Unidentified gear (which means there's a Trait on it), you will probably sell it anyway because of gear with better stats.
  • In the late game only Legendary gear will have a chance of superior stats better than what you are wearing, so everything else is just trash for sale.
So don't worry too much about leaving big chests for "later" when you have "levelled up" so that you can get "the best" gear. If at any time you are actually worried about having good gear to wear:
By mid to late game, you typically have more coin than you know what to do with. And that's without farming gold: Once you have unlocked rescuing Magical Beasts, you can basically fly around the map to beast lairs and collect them, then sell them for 120 coin each.
