Hogwarts Legacy - Gear Upgrade Chart and Magical Beasts / Vivarium Management tips

This is one of our series of Hogwarts Legacy tips for beginners.

Here are the materials cost for upgrading Legendary (gold) gear. Upgrading improves the secondary stat of the gear piece.
There's really no point upgrading lesser gear especially when Legendary gear and upgrade materials are easy to get.
  • You can always shop Gladrags Wizardwear for Legendary gear.
  • Various merchants sell materials from magical beasts.
  • You still need the Loom, and you get that at the same time "rescuing" Magical Beasts is unlocked by a main story quest.
Upgrades
Gear is divided into two types for upgrade material cost: Offense gear and Defense gear. That stat determines the materials needed. Legendary gear can be upgraded three times.

Offense Upgrades - Facewear. Headwear, Outfit
  • 3 Jobberknoll Feather
  • 3 Jobberknoll Feather, 1 Niffler Fur, 1 Toad Wart
  • 3 Jobberknoll Feather, 1 Niffler Fur, 1 Toad Wart, 1 Hippogriff Feather, 1 Graphorn Horn
Defense Upgrades - Handwear, Neckwear, Cloaks and Robes
  • 3 Mooncalf Fur
  • 3 Mooncalf Fur, 1 Fwooper Feather, 1 Thestral Hair
  • 3 Mooncalf Fur, 1 Fwooper Feather, 1 Thestral Hair, 1 Unicorn Hair, 1 Phoenix Feather
Traits
Traits are woven using one unit of Diricawl, Kneazel, or Puffskein material. All Traits of any Tier require only one unit.

Vivarium Management
Initially you start with just one Vivarium but eventually you will get a total of four. There seems to be no particular advantage to placing specific Beasts in specific Vivariums, so based on gear upgrade requirements we recommend organizing your Beasts in your four Vivariums this way:
  • Basic Upgrades and Final Upgrades - Jobberknoll, Mooncalf, Graphorn, Phoenix
  • Offense Upgrades - Niffler, Giant Purple Toad, Hippogriff
  • Defense Upgrades - Fwooper, Thestral, Unicorn
  • Trait Weaving - Diricawl, Puffskein, Kneazel
Other Notes:
  • You need Jobberknoll Feathers and Mooncalf Fur in the highest quantities, and you might as well upgrade all your gear at least once.
  • You get the Phoenix and Graphorn in late game so when you do, you'll want to visit them more often until your inventory builds up. For this reason we recommend putting them on the ground floor Vivarium for easiest access.
  • After the special mission to get your first Graphorn, the rest can be easily captured by flying onto one of the rocks outcrops in the area and from that safe spot use spells on a Graphorn.
    • Note that the male Graphorns CAN sometimes end up jumping onto the rock.
