Dauntless - Behemoth Guide - Gnasher

This is a strategy guide for the Gnasher Behemoth in Dauntless, a kill-boss-monster free-to-play game available from the Epic Games Store. We cover various Behemoths in our Dauntless Behemoth Strategy Guide.

(Regular) Gnasher

Attack Phases

Gnasher still has tail
  • Stay mobile. Attack once or twice (depending on weapon attack animation speed) then move away. If you linger you might be too late to dodge out of an attack.
  • It will prioritize trying to use its tail, with three types of attacks:
    • Spin around; because of the long tail, this has a huge area of effect and can be hard to dodge. If you see it coming with the Gnasher turning its head, running away out of the radius of the spin is probably better than a dodge.
      • Flameborn Gnashers can spin more than once.
    • Roll toward you then turn as it gets up
    • Jump in place, slapping tail on the ground; multiple tail slaps if Enraged and can turn each time to track you.
  • Move in, hit the tail, then move out. Keep repeating until you have broken the tail. If you are using a heavier weapon, go for a stagger by hitting the legs.
Gnasher no longer has tail
  • It will still forward roll, but will now foot-stomp or body block.
  • Try to stay at the rear and keep attacking the tail stump. It reacts quite quickly especially if you are on the side and will try to stomp you.
Charge / Belly-Crawl
  • Typically two consecutive attempts to run you down. Seems rather hard to actually Interrupt this. Try moving just to the side and hitting it on the shoulder.
Jumping Tail Slap
  • This is not too dangerous unless it is Enraged, in which case it jumps many times and each time it jumps toward you and tries to flatten you with its tail. Dodge clear and keep running or it will catch up with its subsequent jumps.

Kat's Hunting Tips

  • Cut off the Gnasher's tail to prevent tail swipes.
  • Interrupt a Gnasher by striking its head when it performs a belly-crawl attack.
  • The Gnasher's stomp can knock you flat. Roll through or away from it.

Flameborn Gnasher

Kat's Hunting Tips

  • The Flameborn Gnasher fights with more agility than its lumbering cousin, while retaining most of its lethal physical characteristics: teeth, tail, and stomping feet. And some instinct, perhaps reacting to the sensation of constantly being aflame, causes this subspecies to spin more than its neutral cousin, catching many an unprepared Slayer off-guard.
  • When the Flameborn Gnasher stomps in fury, the blaze within its feet erupts from the point of impact. With nowhere to go, this energy launches into the air to rain good-to-great balls of fire upon the surrounding area.

Deepfrost Gnasher

Attack Phases

Gnasher still has tail
  • In general it fights similarly as the regular Gnasher, but there are key differences:
    • All moves are faster.
    • After a forward spin slam, it gets up with another attack instead of simply rolling up harmlessly.
    • When it runs to put distance, it will tend to throw a single ice ball instead of rushing back with a Belly-Crawl Charge. The ball starts high so if you react fast enough you can run toward the Gnasher and let it pass harmlessly overhead.
Gnasher no longer has tail
  • Unlike the regular Gnasher, it will still use a lot of maneuvers as if it had its tail. Obviously the effective area is lessened without the tail. But it seems less likely to try to foot stomp if you are close, and instead use some other maneuver.
  • Without the tail, it cannot flip an ice ball at you. So overall, taking out the tail still has priority.

Kat's Hunting Tips

  • Many of the Deepfrost Gnasher's moves will look familiar, but be careful—this chilly, chew-happy challenger is full of surprises.
  • When aether-charged, the Deepfrost Gnasher will chill any Slayers hit by its attacks.
