Hogwarts Legacy - Early Game Assignments - Finding Ingredients. Potions, and Plants

This is one of our series of Hogwarts Legacy tips for beginners.

In the eary game when coin is scarce, you may have difficulty finding ingredients, potions, and plants to complete your Assignments. Obviously they mean for you to explore and find containers to get coin, but here are some alternatives in case you don't just want to grind for gold:

Potions Assignments - use Hopping Pots

  • The first assignment requires Fluxweed to brew the necessary potion, but you may not find any in the wild. However you can get Fluxweed Stems free from the Herbology Greenhouse. One plant is on your way to the Chinese Chomping Cabbages during your first Herbology class.
  • The easier way to acquire Potions is to use the Hopping Pot.
    • Finish the first Flying Class to get the quest to access the Room of Requirement where you can place your Spellcrafts. Then get the Hopping Pot Spellcraft.
    • You don't need ingredients the Hopping Pot to brew potions. It randomly brews something from the potion formulas that you know.
    • If you are at the inventory limit for a particular type of potion, you will not be able to collect it from the Hopping Pot and it will not clear and start production on a new potion.
      • Destroy the pot with Evanesco and create a new one (your Moonstone refund is 100% for destroying a furnishing).
      • The cap for each type of potion (and combat plants) is 12 units.
        • Note that scripted rewards (e.g., quest rewards) do not let you exceed this cap, and you don't even get a notification about the reward, so sometimes you might think you got nothing at all.
  • During the Hogmeade side quest "A Demanding Delivery", you have to drink an an Invisibility Potion (and you are provided with one).
  • If you are up for some running around the map, you can do the Floo Flames Potion Exchange hidden quests instead.
Herbology Assignments - free attack plants
  • Chinese Chomping Cabbages
    • You can pick up some during your first Herbology class. Don't blow them all in combat and you'll have more than enough for your Assignments.
  • Mandrake
    • At an unmarked location in the Forbidden Forest, there are three respawning plants.
      • Look west of Upper Hogsfield for a Unicorn Den.
      • Just to the south is an intersection that looks like an "H".
      • At that "H" intersection, take the NorthWest road. At the next fork turn SouthWest.. You should come to a tent at a cave "Spinners Cavern" marked with spider warnings. Nearby in the forest below is a Mooncalf Den.
      • Continue along that road and you will reach the cabin with three respawning Mandrakes in the garden and a dead body with a note.
  • Venomous Tentacular
    • At the end of the sidequest "Venomous Valor", you can access a room with non-respawning Venomous Tentacular plants.
  • For assignments to grow and harvest a particular ingredient, you can fulfill that with yield from a Cutting Table, but only if the timer started after you received the Assignment (?).
Cutting Tables
  • Cutting Tables might seem to be the Herbology spellcraft corresponding to the Hopping Pot, but they are really only good to maximize your ingredients production.
    • They only create one random unit of a Herbology ingredient that you have seeds for.
    • They do not make attack plants.
  • Instead if your coins are low, I recommend instead investing in a Potting Table with a single Large Pot.
    • You can place seven Potting Tables, and Large Pots can grow any type of seed.
    • Even if you are low on Moonstone you just need one Table placed and just rotate out the crop according to what you need.
