VR Game Review - The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets

VR Game Review: The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets by Fast Travel Games

Played with Oculus Quest 2.

The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets is a pretty simple hidden object game and puzzle game combo. The action takes place in various scenes which are floating islands densely packed with interactables. The puzzles are quite intuitive, and their entertainment value is not so much in the satisfaction of solving a difficult puzzle, but the delight in uncovering a playful interaction.

Although the game is in VR, it did not feel particularly necessary to tell this story in VR. However in VR, you get the experience of interacting with a fun and fantastic "toy play set". You can't assemble it or take it apart, but you can find all the different ways to interact with it and watch the stimulus and result.

Although the puzzle scenes individually are not much of a story, there is a story to the game, and if you pay attention you may find it a heartwarming one at the very end to finish your playthrough.

There's less than two hours of play time here, so you may find the investment feels rather steep with very little replayability (puzzles once solved no longer puzzle, after all). But this is a very polished experience with excellent visuals and a delightful experience. There are some Steam achievements involving actions that are not tracked in-game, but we didn't feel they added anything to the gameplay experience and did not pursue them by replaying the story.

Presently The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets is at a steep holiday season discount on Steam, but we recommend you instead purchase it from Humble Bundle as part of their Black Friday VR Voyager's Pack. The cost of that entire pack of eleven games which includes this title, is only slightly more less than the regular price of this title in the Steam store.
