This is a quick strategy guide for fighting the first dragon boss in Runescape Dragonwilds, Velgar.
Recommended Loadout for first encounter:
- Staff of Light with Air Runes, or other fast-riging range weapon.
- You could use the Anti-Dragon Shield but it's special ability helps you only with the initial blast of the poison breath, not the lingering ground effect that can still accumulate Poison.
- Don't try to get a full combo from your Staff. Most likely you will get one shot or maybe two before you have to dodge something.
- Minimum one piece of Mage Armor for faster Stamina recovery.
- Weak Antipoison Potion (or Lesser Antipoison Potion)
- The Lesser Antipoison Potion is underutilized here because the poison attacks from Velgar can overcome your resistance and make you Poisoned even though the duration hasn't run out. At that point you either eat food to heal through, or you drink another potion to clear the Poisoned status right away.
- Having the resistance active just reduces the rate at which you become Poisoned but it's better to just not be Poisoned at all.
- For the same reason, Fungal Fortitude foods aren't particularly useful here.
- Where the Lesser Antipoison Potion has an advantage is the ingredients: Swampweed and Toadflax can both be grown but Bittercap Mushrooms (required for the Weak Antipoison Potion) must be manually harvested.
- You don't need to drink the Potion yet, only if you get Poisoned status from Velgar's attacks, to clear it immediately.
- Lots of food
- A stack of Dried Redberries or Dried Dwellberries is light and provides decent healing if you are not stingy about it and eat frequently once you're hurt.
- For burst healing, Sweet Veg Balls should be good enough and ingredients are easy to make through farming or collecting in Bramblemead Village.
Boss Moves:
- Melee Attacks
- Hard-hitting but long telegraph so you can see it coming and step back.
- It is recommended you need in melee distance often and step back when it is about to attack instead of trying to Block or Parry. The boss mixes in these attacks instead of strictly using its Ranged Attacks which are much more Movement and Stamina intensive to avoid.
- Ranged Attacks
- If you stay completely out of melee distance, it will not try to mix melee with ranged attacks. This is actually bad since the melee attacks are much more easily avoided.
- Poison Breath: Cone area with lingering poison on the ground.
- Because it is a cone centered on you, the further you are from Velgar, the further you will need to dodge sideways out to get out completely. Stay close to the boss if possible.
- Tracking Ground Spikes: Boss slams down on the ground and a trail of spikes erupts. They follow you if you try to Dodge. Instead, jump up and double-jump to stay in the air if necessary, until they pass behind you.
- Poison Meteors: Bunch of red circles on the ground show where poison puddles will drop. Jump and Air Dodge to move in order to not step in them.
- Flight
- After a few rounds of combat it will fly, carpet the ground with Poison Meteors, and then land.
- The first drop of Poison Meteors is generally easily avoided but if you stay in the area, the second drop will overlap and deny you any safe spots to stand.
- It will land on a different corner of the platform.
