Currently, View Distance is not consistent or reliable when it comes to Chests and Area Quests in Dragonsword: Awakening.
In this video you can see that there is actually a chest on the ledge across the river but despite View Distance set to High, it won't load until you are closer.
Once it is loaded in, you can be further than you originally were and can still see the chest, so obviously all along it was within the View Distance setting.
Other than this issue which can make finding chests confusing, some chests are simply tricky and this Map App can really help. You can upload your savegame and it will mark as "discovered" all the chests and puzzles and quests you have already done. Then you can look through the map to find what you missed.
