Tomb Raider has always been a Truth Seeker

In a bizarre recent move, Tomb Raider is denounced as having a "colonial past" and will reform into a "truth seeker" by Crystal Dynamics and Evil Hat Productions:

Raiding, as depicted in the original Tomb Raider games and stories, involves going to ancient tombs and historical sites of different civilizations and acquiring artifacts. It operates on the assumption of 'finders keepers' that grants raiders with the means and the drive to claim ownership of artifacts, regardless of whether they have any historical or cultural claim to the treasure.

First of all, "Raiding" is just a catchy name for a game and does not have to be what the fictional character does in the fictional world. Just as Evil Hat Productions is not in fact in the business of selling hats that are evil.

Next, let's consider the places Lara goes to. These are lost, secret historical sites that their cultures have basically deliberately abandoned. No one "accidentally forgets" a huge secret temple, especially if it was the headquarters of some tyrant or cult. The country or culture chose to forget it and discard it. Now a wealthy westerner comes along and "rediscovers" these sites. Suddenly, what they threw away like trash is a historical treasure? This is at best disingenuous.

So in fact, Lara Croft has always been a seeker of truth simply in her archaeological work rediscovering these missing links of history. Forcing various countries and peoples to confront their past, no matter how evil or shameful. Inspiring further exploration and understanding. How is this "finders keepers"?

The exciting parts of finding and exploring a site makes the game exciting and compelling and therefore it is what gets gamified. Getting congratulated for unearthing missing links in history is boring and probably problematic for story arcs that are trying to be dramatic and intriguing. But now, the devs just want to make her into some kind of villain? How about just inserting a scene where she's congratulated instead and recognized for her extraordinary achievements?

Or maybe we need Nazi villains to threaten to take away cultural finds so that a manly whip-wielding hero can liberate them.
