When choosing a building site for your base, you might be considering a broad stretch of flat land.
However it may be useful to choose one that has no monsters and right in the middle of an ore deposit!
Build a foundation amid the ore deposit but leave that ground floor open. Your base really starts on the second floor.
The main advantage to this is your Recruit can occupy themselves mining ore while you are busy doing crafting or decorating in your base. In the video below you can see a rough setup. The large boulders make a foundation somewhat tricky but with enough of a foundation and walls to support your second floor, you can make a small base right over an ore deposit on very uneven ground.
A grove of trees might sound great too as a passive source of lumber, but falling trees are liable to wreck your structures.
