Game Review - Invincible Presents: Atom Eve

Game Review: Invincible Presents: Atom Eve by Terrible Posture Games and published by Skybound Games

Score: +5/-

"Become Atom Eve and take control of your own path as one of the most powerful superheroes in the Invincible universe! Unravel a mystery and balance the dangers and responsibilities of being a superhero with the relatable challenges of everyday life."

Atom Eve is basically a comic book. It looks like one, reads like a well-written one, and you can finish one playthrough of all chapters in approximately 4 hours. Short yet satisfying.

If you like the Invincible universe you may also like the idle mobile game Invincible: Guarding the Globe.

-0 Comic book style artwork. Might seem a bit simple but the whole project is "this is a comic book" and it's based on an existing franchise, so it's hard to fault them for staying close to the source material.
+1 A really decent story told with no boring scenes.
    • It doesn't sound like much but nowadays movies and games often have some boring lull in the plot somewhere. Atom Eve isn't all go-go-go action but the interesting scenes keep you moving forward to see what's next.
    • +1 Broad variety of scenes covering many aspects of superhero life and it's complications for Atom Eve. There's more than just combat with bad guys: There's relationships, romance, comic relief, introspection, personal growth, tough choices, and moral choices.
    • +1 Conveniently divided into chapters so you can replay small chunks of the story in case you want to explore alternate outcomes and trying alternate events before moving forward.
    • -0 Some of the replay value comes from not being able to do every event. Often choosing one event to attend will cause the others to be deleted.
    • Note that the story is really about the character, not the events. So while various events seem unrelated, in a way they are. The events are "just" there to give you an idea of what it's like to be Atom Eve the superhero and Atom Eve the teenager, as well as get some satisfying combat.
    • The story is essentially linear with a lot of events that will proceed no matter what your choices are, but there are also enough choices that they can nuance how the individual scenes play out based on how you have managed your relationships.
+1 Intertwined subplots and you see the outcome of your choices in the interactions with other characters.

+1 Simple combat but one that works, is flexible enough for some "combat puzzles", and with an interesting skill tree.

+0 You also get one cleverly-timed respec later in the game coinciding with an appropriate plot point for a respec.
