I do like to suppor the Epic Games Store when I can. But every now and then, I am inexplicably disconnected from the service. Internet's fine but there's just a problem with the Epic Games Store launcher not able to establish a connection. There's no word on Twitter about it, no ETA as to when it'll reconnect. Meanwhile, I can't play anything.
This happened earlier today when I had just finished a Calyx in Honkai Star Rail. It couldn't establish a connection and kicked me back to the launcher. From there, I couldn't launch the game again and it turned out it was because Epic Games Store had lost connection.
Fortunately, you can play Honkai Star Rail WITHOUT the Epic Games Store. You don't even have to have a separate reinstallation.
Start at the official Honkai Star Rail page and choose "Download Now" in the upper right corner.
A dialog window will appear. Choose Windoiws.
When you run the installer, you will get a launcher that looks just like the one used by an Epic Games Store installation of Honkai Star Rail. Instead of installing the game, use the drop-down arrow at the install and tell it where the existing installation is located. You need to navigate to your ..\EpicGames\HonkaiStarRail\Games directory. The installer should successfully find the files it needs and change to a Play button.
Now you can just use the Windows launcher and run Honkai Star Rail without even opening the Epic Games Store.
