VR Game Review: Guns 'n' Stories Preface by MiroWin
Played with Oculus Quest 2, standing and with stationary boundary.
Guns 'n' Stories Preface is the free sample of the Gun 'n' Stories VR shooter games. Basically it's a wild west shooter and although the supported modes may say "Sitting, Standing, Roomscale", really you want to not be seated and extremely mobile, as indicated by the developer's own trailers.
NOTE: We had an issue where our guns fired very slowly, and it was not clear if that were intended. The rate of fire was slow, and the bullets also moved very slowly. Certainly much more slowly than in the videos provided by the developers, such as the one above.
Certainly that made the experience less engaging than, say, Pistol Whip. Combined with the fact that you are supposed to bat aside bullets with your guns (!) -- a rather ludicrous and immersion breaking action -- we cannot recommend this title when there are much more engaging shooters available.
If you do like to fully immerse yourself in VR and especially if you are not playing with your headset attached to your computer by cable, then maybe this title has the physical range of motion that can make it really engaging.
If you are limited in space and can only stand or sit within a small safe zone, then it will certainly be more challenging and you will have to bat aside bullets.
We played it standing and with the Oculus "stationary boundary" setting because those are the limitations of our play space. Unfortunately, we also couldn't really jump around or scramble about even if we had the space, as that would disturb the neighbours around us.
Definitely try the free Preface first to see how it handles. It's also recommended you try other shooter titles first before committing to purchase this. Titles like Pistol Whip are not free, but typically come with a 20-minute free trial (it should indicate this when you try to download, and not try to charge you anything up front).
