Game Review - Figment

Game Review: Figment
Score: +4/-3
Figment is basically a puzzle game with some combat thrown in. Whereas mostly you will be solving puzzles or deducing what to do during boss fights, toward the end you will still need to have mastered quickly moving through obstacles and some aspects of combat.
-Overall the story is just okay, weakened by two main things: Once you start playing the game, it is quickly disconnected from the initial scene and it's a struggle to put it together. And to connect to the wider story at all, you need to find at least some of the optional "Remembrances" -- photos from the past with supposedly key memories -- but because these are often hidden and it can be tricky to revisit locations just to look around, so you're basically lost till the very end as to what the gameplay has to do with the initial scene.
+The locations are fun and interesting, and the creativity in this surreal world add a novelty to the puzzles. Combined with the songs and commentary, the overall ambiance is well put together.
+As a puzzle game, it's pretty good. It starts you off fairly easily and teaches you types of interactive objects, but the rest is up to you to figure out by watching what happens in the world. As puzzle solving goes, it's fairly light but also fulfilling.
+The boss fights are technically fairly easy, but made tricky by having to figure out what you actually need to do. This can be frustrating, especially in the last boss fight, as it can take some figuring out. And if you watch Youtubes to help you, you can get the wrong idea about what you actually need to do because the player didn't actually figure out the mechanic correctly and trying to copy what they do will only lead to frustration when you don't get the same results consistently.
-The amount of fighting and manual dexterity needed to pass certain portions of the game jumps as the chapters go, so depending on your personal aptitude, some portions will require many attempts. The isometric view means you actually need to press two movement buttons to move diagonally in order for your movement to align with the tiles, and that can make things tricky. Fortunately, there aren't too many of these high-intensity scenes.
+-Quality for your money is very high. This is a polished game with solid design and I didn't experience any bugs during gameplay (although the tile-flipping puzzle may not be working as intended and is too easy). The main weakness is the total playtime, which can be rated as rather short. The only replayability is in going back to find all the Remembrances you may have missed, but due to their nature it is not particularly rewarding once you have finished the game.
