Chapter 1: The Will of the Gods
Mission 1: Honour the Gods
- Before you start this campaign, go to the Create Army menu and look through the Chaos units (Undivided, Khorne, and Nurgle). Look at the units and note which are the best ones. By looking ahead, you can keep in mind what NOT to spend your money on too early in the campaign.
- Nothing really special in this mission. Explore everywhere to get all items. Don't blow all your money as soon as you leave, and don't worry about trying to save the one unit that was almost destroyed by Empire forces.
- Do NOT spend any of Thorgar skill points unless there is a first-tier skill you really want. He has second-tier skills with only a level requirement, so if you can wait till level 5, you can immediately maximize something like Indomitable Constitution. Look through his skill tree carefully first.
- In Mission 5, he will have to duel. This is an optional mission which you might as well do, but if you don't have any skill points going in, you're stuck if you can't win it. Save a few in case you need to pick up skills that can help you duel.
- This said, there was only really one hard duel -- the elven Prince in the final mission of Chapter 3. All others were optional.
- Some early duels in combat missions were hard, but all were optional as you could have your regiments shoot the hero to death, or at least injure it enough for an easy duel win.
- We examine Thorgar's skills (Chaos Champion skills) in more detail here.
- The level limit for Chapter 1 is level 15. Even if Thorgar is level 11 at the end of The Flylord (mission 5), you should still be able to get there during or after mission 6. The Undivided Sorcerer typically earns a lot more experience than Thorgar because we use him so extensively to take point in battles.
- For the Sorcerer, maximize Steal Soul because it is so incredibly useful. Then maximize Spell Focus (so you can use Steal Soul often). Wind of Death is important in the early game, but less so in the mid to late game.
- Money is tight until after the first Skaven mission in Chapter 2. It doesn't look that way initially, but it is.
- In Chapter 2, you get a Skaven hero and the Skaven army starts with no upgrades. We spent close to 12,000 gold buying a hero, three regiments, artifacts, and upgrades prior to a tricky first Skaven mission. Aim for at least 10,000 by the start of Chapter 3 Mission 3 (Hightower Brought Low).
- You get gear in Missions 3 and 6, so don't spend too much on one-use items or the early weak items.
- This said, your store changes in Chapter 2, so if there's a piece of gear you absolutely want for whatever reason, get it now. In general you will get enough gear that if you buy stuff here, you won't be able to equip it.
- In Mission 4, there is a Flame of the Gods that can not only resurrect units, but add units until the ranks are full. This is free money and we will try to use that to get more troops than we start that mission with.
- If, at any time, you accidentally over-spent and don't want to roll back your game too far, consider using the money cheat. You can rebuild your army this way, or partially undo some changes, but the Campaign mode won't let you buy experienced troops so you can't exactly undo an upgrade purchase.
